Samuel 25

The Bible describes Abigail as a beautiful and intelligent woman. Yet her husband was described as crude and mean.

So long story short, they Nabal did David dirty after David had provided Nabal with protection and desired nothing but good for him. When David hears word of Nabals response David is filled with anger. David’s first instinct is to react with anger and desires disaster for Nabal and his household. Eventually the word gets around to Abigail about Nabals and David’s situation. She quickly began to gather food and sets out to meet David.

Abigail begins to reason with David but throughout the conversation that David and Abigail had the most interesting thing that stood out to me was when Abigail mentions David slingshot. I mean we all know the story of David and Goliath right? 1 Samuel 25:29 “…even when you are chased by those who seek to kill you, your life is safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in his treasure pouch! But the lives of your enemies will disappear like stones shot from a sling”. I mean come on Abigail was pretty dang smart plus she was already described as an intelligent woman in the Bible so that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. David later thanks her from keeping him from murder and caring out vengeance towards Nabal. Time passes and Nabel dies and Abigail becomes David’s wife. She no longer was the wife to a fool, which literally was the meaning of the Nabals name, but she was the wife to the future king of Israel. Abigail was greatly blessed.

Abigails story shows how she changed her surroundings rather than letting her surroundings change her. She could’ve easily acted in the same manner as Nabal did. She didn’t let Nabals actions or her surroundings change who she really was. She is also another woman in the Bible who had powerful influence. Do you guys remember my post about Eve? She had some pretty powerful influence too, maybe not the best kind of influence but that goes to show how powerful it can be.

Abigail understood the power of influence she had. She used her influence for good when she encountered David. Throughout the conversation they had she was able to influence him to do good and not evil.

I don’t want to let my surroundings change me nor use any influence that I may have for evil. Simply I don’t want to be the reason I cause people to fall into sin or lead them in the wrong direction. That is not what we were called to do. Nabal used his power for evil and things didn’t end too well for him. As for Abigail she was greatly blessed.

Have you ever let your surroundings change you? Or maybe you have been using your influence in the wrong way. Whatever it may be it certainly can be something think about. I enjoyed Abigail’s story and highly encourage you to read it as well! I think it is awesome to learn from so many different women in the bible. There is a lot of them and I am trying to read about as many of them as I can. I hope even one of these stories can impact your life as they have been for me.
